1 脸对著墙壁。如：「面壁罚站」、「面壁思过」。
2 不理、不睬、不介意。《晋书．卷七五．王湛传》：「述无所应，面壁而已。」
3 无所事事的样子。
4 本指达摩大师在嵩山少林寺终日面对墙壁默坐静修。见《五灯会元．卷一．初祖菩提达摩大师》。后用以比喻造诣纯熟高深。
