1 美才，才德俊秀之士。《史记．卷八四．屈原贾生传》：「吴廷尉为河南守，闻其秀才，召置门下。」
2 科举时代科目之称。始于汉，后避光武讳改称茂才，唐与明经、进士并设科目，宋则凡应举者皆称秀才，明清专称入县学的生员。
3 书生的通称。如：「秀才不出门，能知天下事。」
