1 六书之一。因无具体形象，故以象征性的符号来表示意义的造字方法。如上、下。汉．许慎〈说文解字序〉：「指事者，视而可识，察而见意。」也称为「象事」、「处事」。
2 指出事物。南朝梁．钟嵘〈诗品序〉：「五言居文辞之要，是众作之有滋味者也，故云会于流俗。岂不以指事造形，穷情写物，最为详切者邪？」
